Die Welt der Materialien entwickelt sich rasant. Werkstoffe werden immer leichter, leistungsfähiger, haltbarer und können noch besser auf konkrete Anforderungen hin optimiert werden. Zudem rücken Themen wie die Nachhaltigkeit und Recyclingfähigkeit immer weiter in den Mittelpunkt – die CO2-Bilanz eines Materials, eines Produkts oder auch eines Herstellungsprozesses gewinnt ebenfalls an Bedeutung. Auch neue Technologien wie der 3D-Druck und andere Formen des Additive Manufacturing verändern die Welt der Materialien rasant. Eine ganz wichtige Inspirationsquelle ist dabei die Natur. Mittels Bionik finden vorteilhafte Eigenschaften von Pflanzen und Tieren Eingang in die Material- und Produktentwicklung.

Dieser Technologiesprung führt auch dazu, dass Designer die Möglichkeit haben, Produkte in bisher nicht gekannter Weise zu gestalten und zu individualisieren. Die Karosserie eines Autos ebenso wie den Innenraum, Sensoren, Brillen oder Produkte aus dem Bereich Haushalt & Wohnen. Um diese neuen Materialien und damit auch innovative Produkte herzustellen, spielen die Herstellung und Fertigungsprozesse eine nicht zu unterschätzende Rolle in der schönen, neuen Welt der Materialien. Deswegen haben wir uns entschlossen, den MATERIALICA Award, der dieses Jahr in seine 18. Auflage geht, weiterzuentwickeln und die Kategorien anzupassen.

Die klar umrissenen Bereiche Material und Produkt bleiben weiterhin bestehen. Die Kategorie Surface & Technology hingegen, deren Einreichungen sich aber stets in die Kategorien „Material“, wenn es sich um ein Frühstadium des Entwicklungsprozesses handelt, oder „Product“ einordnen lassen, weicht der neuen Kategorie „Process“, in der die Themen Fertigung und die Entwicklung neuer Technologien gewürdigt werden sollen.

Und weil das Thema Nachhaltigkeit und CO2-Effizienz mittlerweile in die Produktion, die Entwicklung neuer Technologien und Materialien und natürlich auch die Gestaltung von Produkten hineinspielt, haben wir uns entschlossen, in jeder der drei Kategorien einen „CO2 Hero“ zu küren für besonders nachhaltige und ressourcenschonende Produkte, Materialien und Prozesse.

The world of materials is developing rapidly. Materials are becoming lighter, more powerful, more durable and can be optimized even better to meet their specific requirements. In addition, issues such as sustainability and recyclability are becoming increasingly important - the carbon footprint of a material, a product or a manufacturing process is also moving towards the center of attention. In this process, nature is a very important source of inspiration. By means of bionics, advantageous properties of plants and animals find their way into material and product development.

This technological leap also means that designers are enabled to design and individualize products in a way never seen before. The body of a car as well as its interior, sensors, glasses or household & living products. To develop these new materials and to produce innovative products, manufacturing and production processes play a role that should not be underestimated in the brave new world of materials. That is why we decided to further develop the MATERIALICA Award, which is going into its 18th edition this year, and to adapt the categories.

The clearly defined areas of material and product remain unchanged. The category „Surface & Technology“, however, whose submissions could regularly be shifted to the category „Material“, if it is an early stage of the development process, or to the category „Product“, gives way to the new category „Process“, in which the topics of manufacturing and the development of new technologies are to be recognized.

And because the topic of sustainability and CO2 efficiency now plays into the production process, the development of new technologies and materials and, of course, the design of products, we have decided to select a „CO2 Hero“ in each of the three categories for particularly sustainable and resource-saving products, materials and processes.
